Sample Street Phase I & II
Algona, IA | Public Works
Overview
ISG designed the reconstruction of a section of S. Sample Street and incorporated new infrastructure while reducing disruption to the school that is located in the affected area directly adjacent to the bulk of the project.
Opportunity
To replace a deficient section of Sample Street near the nearby high school, the City of Algona needed to strategically plan construction before school commenced in the fall. The entire roadway section was in poor condition.
Solution
A section of Sample Street running from Chubb to McGregor Streets in Algona, Iowa, needed to be replaced. Susceptibility to extreme frost heaves left this portion of the road damaged and rough. However, the street runs along the west side of Algona High School and Phase I required the reconstruction to take place while school was out of session in order prevent major disruptions in the fall.
In addition to reconstructing the street surface, the project included a new water main, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer. To improve circulation near the school, ISG designed a new bus parking lane along the east side of the street for parking school buses during student loading and unloading. Each entrance to the high school was resurfaced and is consistently smooth. Phase I of the project was completed before school started, which greatly enhanced the appearance of both the street and the school.
