Loving Farms Bioreactor

Buena Vista County, IA | Water

Overview

ISG partnered with local landowners to implement conservation practices, reducing nutrient loss and improving water quality.

Opportunity

Located in a region where loss of nutrients via agricultural drainage is a known issue, landowners in Buena Vista County were unified in a decision to modify the Drainage District facility in support of water quality efforts.

Solution

Building consensus from upstream landowners, ISG’s water resources team designed and installed a bioreactor to treat 140 acres served by a drainage district facility. In-field placement of the bioreactor along a grassed waterway provided a convenient location for field activities to continue around the structure while facilitating improved water quality efforts. Funding received through the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) allowed for the Loving Farms bioreactor to be completed in a cost-effective manner.
