Meet Graduate Engineer Austin Eigenberg

Motivated by the “infinite opportunities” he is experiencing in construction engineering; Austin embraces the challenges and ever-changing demands of the industry. This dog lover and camper enthusiast is building his dream project, dream home, and dream life in one of the fastest growing regions of the U.S.—South Dakota. Learn more about Austin and his story below:

What do you like most about working in the construction/mechanical industry?

I find the construction industry, particularly the mechanical field, to be an ever-changing and challenging profession, which is why I enjoy my role at ISG. There are always new things to learn, and no two projects are the same. This type of work demands an industrious focus, making the next new project so much fun to work on.

What project are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the Cherapa Place development in Sioux Falls and am extremely excited to be a part of this project team. There is a real sense of pride in designing spaces for the community you live in, especially projects of this magnitude. This site will give downtown Sioux Falls a stunning new backdrop with a mix of buildings consisting of retail space, corporate offices, and high-end condominiums.

List some fun facts about yourself.

• I have two beagles, Nova and Nash.
• My wife and I are currently building our dream home in Brandon, South Dakota.
• I served in the Infantry with the United States Marine Corps for five years after high school.

What drew you to the construction engineering program at Iowa State University?

The construction engineering program is a great hybrid major that offers students the opportunity to pursue construction-focused careers similar to majors like construction management, but with a solid foundation of engineering courses. This field was the perfect major for me after the military. I knew I wanted to be in the construction industry, but I didn’t know in what capacity. Construction engineering allows students to dive into different facets of the industry, offering courses from civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering to general building. After students have been exposed to different elements of the construction industry, they choose a more focused path in their junior year. Upon graduation, students have the skills they need to be great project managers or pursue design engineering. To sum up this major in two words: infinite opportunities. If I had the choice to redo my college career, I would do the exact same program over again.

What is your favorite thing to do in the summer?

My favorite thing to do in the summer is to go camping with friends and family. My wife and I purchased a truck tent last year, and it has been an awesome addition for our camping adventures. We are planning to camp at a few destinations a little further from home and check more national parks off our list.
