U.S. Highway 59
Cedar Valley, IA | Public Works
Overview
The reconstruction of US Highway 59 from the Ida County line north to the City of Cherokee required gathering cross-sections at twenty-five foot intervals for the twelve-mile long project. The project involved surveying the existing alignment and grade of both lanes in order to design a smooth profile for the 6" PCC concrete overlay.
Opportunity
The goal of the project was to be able to mill out a portion of the HMA to better fit the new design profile while leaving a layer of HMA to use as a bond breaker between the original concrete and new concrete overlay.
Solution
ISG engineers designed independent horizontal and vertical alignments to better fit today's design standards while also controlling costs. The new alignments were submitted and approved by the IDOT resident engineer. ISG staff set paving hubs to control the milling of the asphalt and concrete paving operations.
