Working hard and stepping out of her comfort zone are what motivates ISG Graduate Engineer Amanda Goodenow to develop creative design solutions. Check out how Amanda wears different hats when innovating solutions and the role that playing the trumpet played in Amanda’s personal and professional development!

What is it about working with ISG that intrigues you?

The architecture and engineering field is so broad. There are so many things in the world that benefit from the A/E industry. I had never imagined the number of disciplines and professions there are in the field either. Some days I feel like I'm wearing the hat of a planner, an economist, or an architect instead of a civil engineer. ISG has given me a dynamic position in a constantly evolving field that I love and with constant change; we have to be very intentional about keeping up. Whether it’s new technology or water treatment processes in the field, there are always improvements being made to find solutions. As long as we strive to be discerning about all the upcoming gadgets in the field, I think ISG has the resources to continue to succeed and I am excited to be along for the ride.

What part of the ISG culture is your favorite?

I really appreciate how everyone is so hard working. ISG is dedicated to delivering the best, and each person brings their best to the office all day, every day. I also love all the opportunities I have to learn. I am constantly looking for ways to increase my knowledge, and ISG provides me those resources. Having such a solid team across multiple offices with a wide range of experiences gives me the chance to learn from others too.

How has stepping out of your comfort zone helped you at ISG?

For the first 20 years of my life, I had a paralyzing fear of playing my trumpet in front of people. To challenge myself, I tried out for honor band every year in high school and each time I bombed. This act of stepping up to the plate and out of my comfort zone, even when I was full of fear, helped me grow a lot. It taught me that nothing is as scary as it seems if I just do it, try my best, and break it down into manageable parts. At ISG, phone calls, big projects, and even the occasional social interaction, don’t seem so intimidating.

Who inspires you to do your best work?

My mom. I've come to realize that since I'm turning into my mother, I might as well embrace the best parts! She works hard and serves others, and I’m inspired by the example she has set and motivated to give ISG my all.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to bake, cook, and share my delicious creations with the office! I also enjoy seeing movies with my husband and exploring the Iowa parks in the summer.

Making Moves: The Benefits of Relocation

As ISG continues to grow and expand to new geographies, we want to share a few non-traditional benefits that have come with employee owners choosing to relocate. Culture transplants ensure that as we continue to grow, we stay true to our core values, mission, purpose, and culture, which not only benefits ISG employee owners, but our clients as well. This why we encourage relocation across all our locations.
