With a passion for engineering since high school, Justin enjoys the constant opportunities for growth and learning as a civil engineer. While at Iowa State University (ISU), Justin was a member of the collegiate fishing team where he participated in bass fishing tournaments. It’s hard to point to just one thing – ISG does a great job providing an abundance of opportunities, including mentorship and leadership opportunities. All employees are hardworking and motivated, which fuels the fire to succeed in all we do.
The Sioux Falls office has a great mix of business units. This variety allows me to see all aspects of a project through a different lens, and therefore allows me to grow as an engineer. Having recently transferred to Sioux Falls, everyone at the office has been welcoming and eager to show me around to help me get acclimated to the city.
I have always had a sense of satisfaction in seeing a project get built from a plan. In high school, I was fortunate to enroll in an introductory civil engineering course. The experience was satisfying in that it showed me that I could construct a project from a plan I designed while making a positive impact on the community.
There are constant technology advancements in the construction industry that we, as engineers, need to try to keep up with and incorporate into our processes. The advancements in technology are continually challenging the industry to evaluate and respond with design methods and deliverables that fulfill contractor and project needs more efficiently and accurately.
I spend my free time with my girlfriend Vanessa and our two dogs doing outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, and kayaking, and doing home improvement projects too. I like to stay busy and rarely have a free weekend during the summer.
I was president of the collegiate fishing team at ISU. I traveled the country with the team and participated in bass fishing tournaments throughout college. The highlight of my career was qualifying for the college national championship during my senior year. Back then, college fishing was just starting to take off, but today, there are schools that offer fishing scholarships and some of the top prizes at the tournaments include boats!
