Bryan Paulsen, AIA, CID, LEED AP, was a dedicated Minnesota architect who spent more than 40 years shaping spaces that bring people together. He approached his work with consistency and humility, making those around him feel valued. Bryan’s clients and co-workers experienced his approach firsthand, and it is what continues to define his impact today.
His influence is evident in the work he completed, the people he mentored, and the steady way he helped influence communities throughout Southern Minnesota and ISG’s culture. Bryan founded Paulsen Architects in 1995, and in 2013, the firm joined ISG. His bold design perspective was the seed for architectural growth at ISG. He brought a team of architects, an interior designer, and a portfolio to support the years of experience those individuals had.
Bryan built strong client relationships while always staying humble—often stepping back to let his team take the lead, something not every owner does or does well. He trusted us but was also always excited to contribute. That balance between the art of relationships and the desire to drive good design was always present. Every Friday, Bryan took time to sketch by the window, a quiet but consistent reflection of his focus on good design.
To carry forward Bryan’s commitment to design and his investment in others, ISG established the Bryan Paulsen Legacy Scholarship in March 2026. The $2,500 scholarship is awarded to an architecture student who reflects Bryan’s love of architecture and ambition to make a positive impact through the built environment.
Applicants submit a transcript and sketches, along with descriptions about why they want to become an architect and how they will serve as mentors and community advocates while maintaining design excellence. Scholarship applications are reviewed by Bryan’s wife, Tami, and ISG leadership.
The 2026 recipient, Lauren Vande Griend, an architecture student at Iowa State University shared her perspective on how architecture can bring people together and strengthen communities, while also creating environments that encourage connection. Tami shared, “I could actually hear Bryan’s voice describing a similar passion for design and how it can benefit and affect communities.”
Beyond his formal role in leading ISG’s architecture team, Bryan injected vibrant energy that carried into other areas of the firm. His Friday sketching sessions stand out as a reflection of a steady, design-focused mindset. In the Mankato office, a conference room dedicated in his honor carries that forward, featuring sketches of local buildings he helped design and the names of scholarship recipients.

His legacy lives on through the Bryan Paulsen Legacy Scholarship, supporting the next generation of architects committed to thoughtful, community-centered design. Applications open each year for students ready to carry that impact forward.
