January 31, 2014 (Mankato, Minnesota) – On Friday, January 31, 2014, ISG was recognized with an Honor Award for Engineering Excellence for the Sibley Park Apartments from the Minnesota Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies. The Engineering Excellence awards are presented annually by ACEC/MN, to recognize achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of merit and serve to advance the profession. Sibley Park Apartments is a 60 unit apartment in the Sibley Parkway redevelopment area, a brownfield site, in Mankato, Minnesota. The specific property upon which this project was built had been the former location of a precast concrete product manufacturer. While the buildings had previously been removed, there were existing foundations still on the site, as well as environmental impacts from the former use.
This project had a number of unique challenges that were overcome, including contaminated soils, contaminated groundwater, and existing flood control systems. ISG and Braun Intertec worked closely throughout the design process on behalf of the owner, Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership, to determine the optimal building elevation based on the soil conditions, groundwater elevations, and site access. This cooperation and design collaboration resulted in significant cost savings to the owner and reduced construction time for site-related work. The resulting project was recognized as a Petroleum Brownfield success story and has been well received in the community.
