City of Storm Lake

ISG’s commitment to Storm Lake has supported essential water and wastewater upgrades, downtown revitalization planning, various commercial developments, facility assessments, and recreational enhancements. In every effort, ISG has worked hard to combine technical expertise with community-focused design to create solutions that truly make a difference.

Over the years, the City’s confidence in this approach has led them to appoint ISG as their on-call water and wastewater engineering consultant in 2018. Acting as a reliable extension of City staff, ISG provides guidance at council meetings, supports operations around the clock, and helps shape long-term plans that sustain growth and protect resources.

Key Achievements

Delivers reliable solutions as the City’s appointed water and wastewater engineer

  • Delivers reliable solutions as the City’s appointed water and wastewater engineer
  • Provides 24/7 operational support and troubleshooting for critical systems
  • Informs City decisions through active participation in council and staff meetings
  • Integrates technology and design to improve functionality, aesthetics, and long-term performance
  • Supports growth through strategic planning and capital improvement development with annual cost projections
  • Completed more than 30 projects spanning infrastructure, planning, and recreation

Project Highlights

Water Tower No. 5

Using a hydraulic water model, the team identified a high-demand location that would maximize performance for the new Water Tower No. 5. The resulting water tower is the largest in City history, with a 1.75-million-gallon composite-pedestal design that eliminates the need for periodic re-coating and provides long-term cost savings. The tower stands proudly today, improving system efficiency while offering dependable service and the capacity to support future growth.

Downtown Master Plan

Storm Lake sought a vision to enhance downtown vitality, improve walkability, and create inviting public spaces. Through an iterative process that integrates community input, ISG developed a Downtown Master Plan that introduces streetscape improvements, protects bike lanes, and adds green infrastructure and community gathering spaces. ISG’s design visualizations included a slider of before and after concepts featuring intersections and public art features. The plan positions downtown as a vibrant hub for commerce and culture.

Memorial Lift Station

Memorial Lift Station, originally built in 1983, is the City’s largest and most critical wastewater lift station. Aging equipment and outdated controls posed operational risks and limited monitoring capabilities. ISG designed a complete controls system replacement, adding remote monitoring, ventilation, and hazardous gas detection. The project included bypass pumping during construction and coordination with a large industrial producer. Since the upgrade, ISG has supported additional lift station projects, including Radio Park and College Avenue and 3rd Street improvements.

Production Wells

As Storm Lake grows, expanding source-water capacity is essential. ISG partnered with consulting firm, LRE Water, for a desktop survey and exploratory drilling to identify optimal locations for a new well within the three available aquifers. In Frank Starr Park, the location for Well 21 was identified and then designed by ISG to blend the new infrastructure into the park setting. The success of Well 21 spurred the City to work with ISG to design, permit, and oversee construction of Wells 22 and 23. With these high-quality water sources, the City is expanding their capacity and reducing treatment costs for the community.
