From Intern to Leadership

Sam Brockshus, PE

I began my journey at ISG as an intern in the Storm Lake office, gaining experience in surveying and civil engineering while completing my degree at Minnesota State University, Mankato. After graduation, I transitioned to a full-time position at ISG’s Mankato office.

From the start, I was embraced in a collaborative and supportive environment where team members were eager to share their expertise and answer my questions. Over the past 10+ years I have steadily progressed in my career, earning the role of Structural Engineering Practice Group Leader.

"As someone who started as an intern, it was motivating to see ISG's investment in career trajectories, playing a role in growth and success for everyone, no matter their role."

ISG Design Competiton
ISG's Design Competition invites university students to showcase innovative, community-focused design solutions. Finalists have a chance to win $1,000 and gain recognition as future design leaders.

Congratulations to the 2025 winner, Gracie Erickstad, an architecture student at North Dakota State University.

"I appreciated the integration of a structural intervention while prioritizing site considerations. The pavilion and elevated walking deck would certainly enliven the park even further! Beautiful graphic representations as well.”

– John Kretchmer, ISG Architect, 2025 ISG Design Competition Judge

What They're Saying

“It has been super impactful to learn about what it means to be part of an employee-owned firm and has changed my perspective. We are truly all in this together, we hold each other accountable, and every little thing can make an impact. This speaks measures to me because the ultimate goal is to make a positive impact.”
Cooper Vanden Einde
Project Management Intern | Sioux Falls Office | South Dakota State University
“Everyone at ISG helped me feel confident and supported. Whether it was the people I connected with almost every day, casual conversations in the breakroom, or joining the office sand volleyball team, all of it made adapting to a new environment so much easier. There was a ton of communication, and I learned so much every day.”
Tori Nemesio
Architecture Intern | Waterloo Office | Iowa State University
“It was really impactful to work with ISGers who were in my shoes not that long ago. They gave me the tools and support I needed to be successful, and it was inspiring to see how much they had grown since their internship. I also enjoyed having lessons and support from a variety of people, not just one person.”
Ellie Janda
Civil Engineering Intern | Sioux Falls Office | Iowa State University
“Prior to the new employee workshops, I knew ISG was employee owned, but the workshop provided an opportunity to dive deeper. It showed me how the culture of our company is driven by the people who act as owners. There is a lot of trust and support, and I was working on real projects, not just busy work. I truly felt like others wanted me to succeed.”
Emily Dahl
Civil Engineering Intern | Bloomington Office | Iowa State University
