December 10, 2018 (Des Moines, IA) – In recognition of achievements and expertise in the design and construction of asphalt pavement, ISG Project Manager, Nick Frederiksen, was recently honored as the Consulting Engineer of the Year from the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa (APAI) during their awards ceremony this week. Nick, having recently celebrated his 20th anniversary with ISG, a nationally recognized and locally rooted multi-disciplinary architecture, engineering, environmental, and planning firm, was nominated for services specific to the City of West Des Moines HMA Resurfacing Program, building upon positive relationships that had developed leading up to the project.

The award honors a consulting engineer “that has shown exemplary knowledge of asphalt construction in both design and construction of asphalt projects,” as described by the APAI. While on the surface, projects such as the HMA resurfacing effort seem minor, challenging traffic control and detour elements can have a major impact on communities if not proactively addressed.

“Nick truly understands and exemplifies what it means to be part of a team working towards a common goal,” states Derek Johnson, PE, Vice President and leader of ISG’s Des Moines office. “ISG places a heavy emphasis on open and direct communication with clients and contractors because it fuels safe and efficient projects of all kinds—especially for asphalt paving. Such paving projects often happen nearby community homes, businesses, schools - you name it. So the level of communication and responsiveness makes all the difference,” notes Derek.

Under Nick’s leadership as project manager, ISG has taken on a number of successful pavement projects in Iowa. ISG has worked with the City of West Des Moines since 2017 and into 2018, and will continue the HMA resurfacing project into 2019. Understanding that city streets and highways play a large role in the everyday community experiences, Nick made it a point to communicate early, clearly, and often with neighboring Dowling Catholic High School during the HMA project, and the efforts did not go unnoticed. Matt Meendering, Dowling’s Principal, sent the City a hand-written note complimenting ISG’s communication, sharing that “the effort put in to work with us on coordinating this project was/is greatly appreciated. Every effort was made to work and ensure there was effective communication and transparency in the process.”

Local residents also noticed Nick and the many dedicated project and City partners’ coordination and schedule efforts.

“These guys were great. They communicated their plans and answered questions; and most of all, they did a great job. Best contractors I have ever dealt with and we’ve lived in this home since 1978.” – City of West Des Moines Resident

“Partners like Des Moines Asphalt and Paving and City of West Des Moines make it easy to focus on the right solutions, community impact, and design integrity,” notes Nick. “Truly grateful for the opportunity to serve our local City and partners, and be honored by the APAI.”

Nick is based out of ISG’s Des Moines office. Additional ISG Des Moines metro news includes a recent 45th anniversary celebration as well as Heart of America Group’s unveiling event for the ISG designed development at 601 E Locust in the East Village. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services were also bolstered with a 2018 acquisition of Des Moines-based MEP firm, VGI Designs.
