Polk County Wetland Wave

The Helland Wetland Bank, located on a private family farm in Polk County, Iowa, is an eight-acre wetland designed to improve water quality by reducing nutrients within a smaller watershed near Big Creek Lake. ISG provided the technical design and construction services for this collaborative project, which is funded through a blend of public and private contributions, including support from Polk County, the Great Outdoors Foundation (GOF), and local businesses. The site integrates several best management practices, including bioreactors, saturated buffers, and wetlands, and aligns with the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy.

  • 1.6-acre permanent pool wetland with a 6.5-acre grass buffer.
  • Treatment for 115 acres of agricultural drainage and runoff.
  • Practices supporting the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy, including bioreactors and saturated buffers.
  • Private-public partnerships for water quality improvements.
