Patterson Wetland Watershed Storage
Le Sueur SWCD partnered with ISG to evaluate and design the restoration of a drained wetland basin. The project restored a 28.3-acre water storage basin with a 7-acre buffer, converting former agricultural and degraded wetland areas back to their historic, pre-drainage condition.
Designed to temporarily store water for up to 12 days, the restored basin increases watershed resilience and improves water quality in Lake Washington by reducing sediment and nutrient loading from high-intensity rainfall events. Construction was completed in November 2024, resulting in approximately 158 acre-feet of new water storage capacity and measurable reductions in pollutants and peak flows.
- About 44.9 tons of total suspended solids, 274 pounds of total phosphorus, and 8,224 pounds of total nitrogen will be reduced annually
- Peak flow rates at the outlet are reduced by about 54% during a two-year storm event
- $408,000 grant from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources and $77,047 in matching funds from the Lake Washington Improvement Association
