Lovin Farm Bioreactor

Pocahontas County, IA | Water

Overview

Located in Pocahontas County, the Lovin Farm bioreactor treats approximately 224 acres to reduce nitrate loss.

Opportunity

ISG leveraged special funding provided by the State of Iowa to implement innovative drainage solutions through the design and construction of bioreactors.

Solution

Partnering with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), ISG provided technical services to implement conservation practices to improve water quality from 224 acres in Pocahontas County effected by agricultural drainage. To reduce nitrate loss, a bioreactor was installed on recently installed tile from 2016 and 2017. Capacity of the bioreactor was limited due to high water levels in the outlet ditch, however, the Iowa Soybean Association is intending to monitor the site for flow and water quality levels. The new bioreactor brought an increased awareness to farmers demonstrating how conservation methods reduce nitrate loading to surface waters.
