Lake Washington Regional Park + Campground
Le Sueur County, MN | Sports + Recreation
Overview
Having designed the first phase of development for Lake Washington Regional Park and Campground, ISG later developed a master plan focused on enhancing access and attracting visitors to the 166-acre destination park.
Opportunity
As a popular lake destination in southern Minnesota, Lake Washington Regional Park + Campground wanted to drive economic development and leverage its natural resources with strategic site and accessibility improvements.
Solution
Lake Washington Regional Park + Campground has a stretch of undeveloped shoreline (5/8 mi.) and is the only park located on Lake Washington, the most heavily developed and used lake in Le Sueur County. The County’s main purpose in purchasing land for this park during the 1970s was to protect the land’s natural beauty and resources for others to enjoy in the future. The park is one of the few places that is still open to the public and remains quiet and uncompromised by development. The master plan was intended to reflect this initial vision while making the park more accessible for visitors.
In 2019, the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks & Trails Commission (GMRPTC) designated Lake Washington Regional Park and Campground as a regional significant destination and awarded the County $983,511 to continue their enhancement efforts.
Improvements that will be completed with the awarded funding include:
- Roadway and Trail (paved and unpaved) extensions into the undeveloped portions of the site
- Prairie restoration plantings
- Additional camping
- Nature play
- Improved water access
- Signage (wayfinding and educational)
