Martin County Ditch No. 28 Nutrient Treatment Train

Serving as Martin County’s drainage engineer for many years, ISG embraced a unique challenge at the request of landowners to evaluate the needs and costs for enhancing the Martin County Ditch 28 (CD 28) drainage system. The outdated public drainage system drained into the Fairmont Chain of Lakes, the City of Fairmont's drinking water source. Through a grant from the Clean Water Fund, ISG designed and implemented a nutrient treatment train, including a 10-acre nutrient treatment wetland and an 8,000-linear-foot two-stage ditch, to effectively mitigate nutrient runoff while reducing flooding downstream. This collaborative effort involving diverse stakeholders, including agencies, landowners, and the City of Fairmont, showcases the positive outcomes of working together to improve drainage infrastructure and protect downstream drinking water sources.

  • 10-acre nutrient treatment wetland and an 8,000-linear-foot two-stage ditch
  • Nutrient treatment train approach to reduce nutrients and streambank erosion
  • Grant application support and $880,000 secured in Clean Water Funds
  • Multiple stakeholders working together to integrate water quality into the project
